Boiler economizer is a special device installed under the exhaust pipe at the tail end of industrial boilers to recover and utilize the waste heat of the exhausted smoke. The heat of the temperature flue gas reduces the exhaust temperature of the flue gas, saves energy and improves efficiency, so it is called an economizer.

Most of utility boiler’s exhaust gas temperature is higher 20~30ºC than design temperature. Therefore, adding lower temperature economizer at utility boiler can decreasing.

Boiler exhaust gas is a kind of useful source, therefore, we can use new technology equipment to reduce exhaust gas temperature. Flue gas lost is a part of boiler’s thermosteresis, which is about 5% to 12%. It’s 60% to 70% of the total heat loss. Exhaust gas temperature increase 10ºC will lead to flue gas lost increasing 0.6% to 1.0% and increase 1.2 to 2.4g/kwh coal used.

Reducing exhaust gas temperature has important signification for energy conservation and emission reduction. Installing lower temperature economizer at the end of boiler real smoke channel  increase exhaust waste gas recovery, increasing generating capacity,reduce water consumption of desulfurization and protect chimney.

Non-condensing economizers
The most common are non-condensing economizers. They are heat exchanger coils‚ usually finned‚ that are located in the flue gas ducting at the exit of the boiler. Typically‚ a non-condensing economizer will raise the overall efficiency by 2% to 4%. They are designed and operate to maintain the flue gas temperature above the flue gas condensing temperature to prevent corrosion of the flue gas ducting. This is particularly important for fuels containing sulphur‚ as sulphurous compounds will form in the flue gas that will both raise the overall flue gas dewpoint and when condensation occurs will lead to the formation of sulphuric acid‚ which is highly corrosive.

Condensing economizers
Condensing economizers are designed to accommodate the corrosive fluids generated when condensing the moisture out of the flue gas. There are 2 types of condensing economizers: heat exchanger and direct contact (spray). They capture much more heat and therefore can raise the overall boiler efficiency by 10% to 15%. For condensing economizers to be the most effective‚ low temperature heat sinks are required to bring the flue gas temperature well below the flue gas condensing temperature.
